I believe the truth is that the british could not effectively judge, and cannot effectively judge them, because they have been removed from the original context and meaning. When it became fashionable to denigrate the african, the creations of the african were ugly. When it became fashionable to pretend to embrace the african and his culture, the creations of the african were beatiful.
